The Center for Enhancing Life Skills - 'Our Place'
This is an opportunity for challenged individuals to get together with peers and learn skills that can lead to a better quality of life. The HRC has remodeled a wing of it’s main building on Bethel School Road, Indian Orchard. The facility has a fully furnished kitchen and dining area that will offer program participants the opportunity to acquire skills for food preparation from basic meals such as lunches to special meals where families of participants will be invited.
An emphasis on eating healthy will be supplemented by an exercise program available to consumers who may need to build their strength and stamina. Trips to the surrounding community will further offer exercise and opportunity to make purchases of the food that will be prepared in the program.
Social skills will be addressed as participants learn appropriate social relationships. For those who wish, staff assistance will be offered to consumers and families to help them host an occasional, small gathering in their home for coffee, tea, and dessert.
Arts & Craft classes will be made available so that participants can explore activities that they can use during leisure time while at home.
For those individuals needing guidance with basic self help areas such as hygiene, the program will provide a learning opportunity with practical experiences.
For persons who may wish to work part-time, the availability of a Vocational Training Center next door will offer opportunities to develop basic work skills. The amount of time spent in either program can be adjusted to meet the needs of the individual. For retired individuals, 100% of their week can be spent at ‘Our Place’ while others may wish to attend only one day per week.
For those who could benefit from academics, a basic curriculum will be offered that can help develop basic skills or reinforce what the individual learned while in school. Each area of the curriculum will meet individual needs.
In order to participate:
Families/individuals interested in the Program are invited to call the HRC at 570.253.3782 Ext. 100 to obtain answers to questions or to arrange a tour.
In order to participate, an individual must be registered with their County Mental Health & Mental Retardation Office as well as have approval for funding.
